Editing Services
Academic Editing
Our comprehensive editing and proofreading work has shaped books published by university presses, such as Harvard University Press, Princeton University Press, and MIT Press. We also help authors prepare academic writing for submission to scholarly journals and magazines.
Book Indexing
Book indexing is an art. Our indexing work is published in Upriver Press books and, for example, in A Crash Course on Crises (Princeton University Press, 2023), and Democratizing Finance: The Radical Promise of Fintech (Harvard University Press, 2022).
Ghostwriting
Professors and researchers who have a body of published articles in academic journals often lack time or the ability write a book. Our team can, at a fair rate, help authors transform their expertise into books designed for wider audiences.
Editorial reviews
It is wise to get professional feedback about unfinished manuscripts. We will carefully read your book and provide counsel on how to improve the work before you hire an editor. Our editorial reviews also include a market analysis, and suggestions for publishing and publicity.
Author Coaching
The publishing world is complex and full of pitfalls. At a low cost, we work one-to-one with authors to help them consider best options for writing, publishing, and marketing their books.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Upriver Press and Endeavor Literary are separate businesses. Upriver Press is a traditional press whose books are distributed by Independent Publishers Group (IPG). Upriver Press partners with Endeavor to offer specialized hybrid publishing options and concierge editorial services to nonfiction authors and other academic publishers. The two companies share similar values and a sincere passion for bringing great nonfiction books to readers.
-
Hybrid publishers (like Endeavor Literary Press) allow the author to hold all publishing rights and profits. The author pays Endeavor for the editing, book design, typesetting, and publishing work. The book is published at a professional level, but usually without marketing support or full-service distribution. We are happy to discuss the pros and cons of hybrid publishing.
-
First, Endeavor’s team has extensive experience working with scholarly nonfiction writers with expertise in economics, social sciences, history, technology, and the arts.
Second, Endeavor is not a publishing mill or “vanity press.” Before offering a contract, the staff evaluates each book according to the book’s purpose, writing quality, author credentials, and marketability. These criteria are the same as those used by university presses. If we accept the book, then we give wholehearted, personal attention to the book and the author.
-
One advantage of hybrid publishing is that it takes less time to launch the book. Depending on the book, the Endeavor team can usually move a manuscript into the world within three to six months.
-
Every book has different needs. We start with an initial review of the manuscript, assess the editing needs, and then provide a transparent quote with no hidden costs. Cost factors include: writing quality, word count, number of citations, indexing needs, etc. As a general estimate, authors can expect to pay about $5,000 for an academic book with 60,000 words, including book design.
For those who only need standalone editing services, without publishing, please contact us for our fair rates.
-
Endeavor works with James Clarke, an award-winning graphic designer, for cover design, typesetting, and ebook conversion. He works with authors to convey the book’s central message in an aesthetic and compelling way. The process is personal, creative, and iterative.
-
As with Upriver Press, Endeavor never uses AI for any aspect of the editing, design, or publishing process. Endeavor does not accept manuscripts generated by AI. See the Upriver Press AI policy at this link.
